Our small homestead area sits on just two acres, but with a bit of planning we hope to make 2019 a great year. Expanding some of our areas, more clean up of the property and growing a bigger garden is just a few of the goals for this year.
2019 Homestead Goals
We have put a lot of hard work into clearing our land so that we can get our double-wide manufactured home moved. We have done all of the work by hand, taking down trees and cutting them into firewood, uncovering the barn, and preparing now to clear the driveway that we plan to use. So, at the top of my goals this year is to get our home moved over, but we are still waiting for a few more things to fall into place.
Clear Fence Rows
There is a lot of clearing and clean up to do. The fence rows have trees grown up in them and a lot of brush, so they will need to be cleaned out before we fix or replace fencing. The goal is to eventually get a few farm animals and we will need good fences to keep them in.
2019 Vegetable Gardening Goals
Build a Bigger Garden
Last year, I built 8 raised garden beds and got them filled with dirt. I planted tomatoes, green beans and sweet potatoes last year but hope to double the size of the garden this year. I plan to build a few more large tomato trellis because the one I made last year, worked extremely well. I will also be using my garden markers again this year because I purchased slate last year and used a chalk marker to identify what was growing in my garden and herb beds.
Storing the Harvest
I have done some small batch canning and preserving in the past few years but I hope to do a lot more of it this year. Feeding a big family isn’t cheap especially when you choose to purchase fresh whole food. Storing the produce from our own garden will be great for our family.
I really love using herbs when I cook and this year, I plan to grow a lot more of my own to use fresh, dry and use later in the year. Medicinal herbs are also something that I want to add more of. I have started making more of our own salves, infused oils and other natural products. Being able to dry my own medicinal herbs and use them throughout the year is something I look forward to.
2019 Berry and Tree Goals
Plant Berry Bushes
I have an ideal spot picked out for starting our own berry patch and plan to start with blueberries and blackberries this year. I look forward to the day that I can pick my own berries and make homemade jam.
Plant More Fruit Trees
Last year we planted several varieties of fruit tree including plum and peach. I also planted to pecan trees and I plan to add apple trees this year.
2019 Beekeeping Plan
Increase Our Beehive
I am in my first year of beekeeping and so I haven’t shared a great deal about the process yet. I still have a lot to learn but I do hope to add at least one more hive this year.
There is so much to learn about beekeeping and as a new beekeeper, I have a lot to learn. One of my goals this year is to attend classes and workshops so that I am better equipped to raise healthy bees.
Flower Gardening Goals
Plant More Perennials
I love having fresh flowers in the home throughout the gardening season and plan to plant more perennials so that I have them all season long. I would love to have enough to grow for myself and enough to share with others. Last year I planted 3 white peony bushes up against the garden shed and then again in the fall, I planted 2 more. I have decided to mix some perennials in the raised garden beds so that I have flowers and vegetable growing in the same area. I shared a lot of information about planting several varieties of flowers and bulbs last year in the flower gardening section of my blog.
Plant Annual Flowers
I grew Zinnias this past year, and they are one of the easiest cut flowers to grow. They bloom for all summer long and make beautiful cut flower bouquets. I hope to add more variety this year so that I can have more flowers for our bees to enjoy and more flowers for me to enjoy.
Our little farm is small but we have big plans to use it to become more self reliant in the 2019 year. It doesn’t come without hard work and determination, but our family has that and we look forward to what the new year holds.
