Homemade From Scratch Vanilla Chai Coffee Latte

In this homemade from scratch Vanilla Chai Coffee Latte, coffee is mixed with a blend of vanilla, spices, and cream. Dashes of cardamom, cloves, ginger, cinnamon and pepper combine for a warm delicious drink, adding something new to your morning coffee.

What is Chai Coffee?

Chai is a very popular coffee shop drink. It can be made with a shot of espresso, chai concentrate mixture, and steamed milk. These are often known as dirty chai drinks.

Chai is actually a tea from Indie and is generally made of a spiced tea blend that includes black tea mixed with strong spices, like cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger, and black peppercorns. The spiced tea mixture is typically brewed with milk and sweetened with sugar or honey.

There is a huge variation in how chai drinks are made and the way that they taste. I have created my own homemade chai mix and I prefer mine mixed in with coffee for a warm delicious drink.

How to Brew Spiced Vanilla Chai Coffee | Latte

There are a few different ways that you can make this homemade from scratch vanilla chai coffee latte. I do not own a regular coffee pot but I do have the coffee drip stand and pour mason from Red Rooster Trading Company. I use a reusable coffee sock in my pour mason and I hand grind my coffee using the Camano Coffee Mill.

You can also make this chai coffee in a regular coffee pot by mixing the chai mixture in with the ground coffee, then brew coffee as you normally would.

These directions are for a single-serve coffee cup size. Adjust measurements according to the way you will make yours.

2 tsp Chai Mix – placed into a disposable teabag (if doing the pour-over method)
2 tbsp Ground Coffee
3 tbsp heavy whipping cream or half-n-half
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/4 tsp Stevia or sweetener of choice
Dash of nutmeg

  1. Brew coffee either in a regular coffee pot with the chai mix mixed into the ground coffee or as shown above using a coffee drip stand and pour mason. If using the pour-over method, place the chai mix into a disposable tea bag and put it into the coffee mug to steep into the tea.

  2. While coffee and chai mix are brewing, heat the heavy whipping cream or half-n-half over medium heat, with the 1 tsp of vanilla and sweetener. Do not boil, just heat until near-boiling.

  3. If you use the coffee drip stand method, remove the chai mix in the tea bag and discard. If using a coffee pot, pour a hot cup of coffee.

  4. Pour the sweetened stove mixture over the top of the coffee and then garnish with nutmeg.

  5. Sip and Savor

This drink has become my favorite for the winter season although I may find that I need an iced version come summer. I never imagined that this chai spice mixture mixed with coffee could taste so good but it does! I would love to know if you make this drink!

  2. Im confused. You mentioned a teabag. When does this come into the process or is it just chai flavored coffee latte? No tea used? Looks and sounds delicious tho..

    1. Thanks for commenting. I went back and edited the post as I can see how it could be confusing. I only have a pour over stand that I use to brew coffee and so I put my chai mix into a teabag and then put it into my coffee mug. So while my coffee is dripping into the mug the chai mix is steeping in the cup. Does that make sense? If you have a regular coffee pot than you can just add the chai mix in with the ground coffee and brew as you normally would.
